Using Twitter Ads in Affiliate Marketing, even though affiliate marketing is one of the favorite ways through which bloggers make money online, it also requires so much work and skills in different areas.
There are many factors which when combined together can lead to successful affiliate marketing campaign.
Some of these factors are:
- High trust level within your niche
- Being able to find a profitable niche and affiliate products
- Good writing skills for product reviews
- The ability to write insightful content
- How much traffic you can get
Most of these factors come easily for people who have started their own online business before, but that doesn’t make them harder to beginners.
There are many resources which are freely available online that can teach you all of these skills, and there are also many affiliate marketing training and courses that can help you excel at them.

One skill that eludes even the most experienced affiliate marketers is being able to generate targeted traffic to their affiliate website.
If you are able to generate a consistent stream of quality traffic to your affiliate website and manage good sales conversion rates then you have everything you need to succeed in affiliate marketing.
Channels of Traffic Available to Affiliate Marketers
Getting traffic to your affiliate website or blog is a challenge that many affiliates face.
And many affiliate marketing course can help you with that, either by providing tools or traffic strategies that can yield the best results for you.
But with various traffic channels available online, it became easier and easier to overcome this challenge.
Some of these traffic sources are free like:
- Search engines organic traffic from Google (SEO)
- Social media traffic
And some require a budget (small or big) to run them like:
- Banner ads
- Solo Ads
- Performance marketing
Banner ads
Banner ads are one of the oldest traffic generation methods where you simply buy an ad space on a high traffic website and place your banner with your affiliate link.
But to be honest, unless you have a big budget to pay $2,000 for a high traffic website to place your ad in an optimal location on the website, you won’t see convincing results.
Solo ads
Solo ads is also a good source of quality traffic for your affiliate offers, you contact a list owner and give him around $200 for sending an email blast on your behalf.
The email message could contain either your affiliate link to sell directly or a link to you review page where you have your affiliate link.
I am a big fan of solo ads for selling affiliate products, but then again, they require a substantial budget that could be out of reach for newbie affiliates.

Performance marketing
Performance marketing is a model where you are only charged if your ads are clicked or viewed. That’s why they call it “Performance”.
This makes it a great option for beginner affiliate marketers, because with any paid ad campaign you need to test the best copy that converts well for you.
Pay per click is your best bet in performance marketing, because you can start small with say $50 and see if the ad converts, if not then put another $50 until you finally have the winning formula.
There are many networks that offer PPC ads like:
- Google Adwords
- Facebook Ads
- Twitter Ads
But I am going to focus on Twitter ads since they have less rigid ad-acceptance criteria.
You can still do Facebook ads and Adwords campaigns because many affiliates had great results with them just like Twitter ads.
Starting Your Affiliate Marketing campaign Using Twitter Ads
First, you need to login to your Twitter account and head over to the twitter ads section:
Twitter will then allow you to choose the type of campaign to run:
- Tweet engagements
- Website clicks
- App installs
- Video views
- Followers
- Leads on Twitter
The best one for your affiliate campaign is Tweet engagements, as it allows you to promote a tweet that includes a link to your affiliate product review (or your affiliate link directly).
From inside the campaign’s dashboard, you will be able to set multiple parameters that affect how your ad will perform on Twitter.
And that’s where you try to target the right people for your affiliate product so you can generate affiliate sales.

First, you need to enter the campaign name, which could be anything just for your reference.
Then the first targeting will start by telling Twitter which countries you like your ads to appear to (Twitter users from those countries).
There are countries that are known to have tier 1 traffic; people in those countries are most likely to buy from you as opposed to people from other countries.
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Australia
- Canada
Those also are English speaking countries, and because many affiliate products are English based, it makes them a good geo-targeting option.
On the downside, the average click cost is high so it can cost you more money to generate a sale.
But if your affiliate commission is high enough, then it should not be a problem.
Next, you get to choose the gender you want to target.
If your affiliate product is for women (i.e. shopping, wedding niches) then you will be able to target them.
But if your product targets both then select “Any gender”
Then comes the most important targeting settings, “Niche Targeting”
Twitter gives you many options to reach your niche’s audience by:
People who tweet and search with certain keyword (Add keywords)
Followers of niche relevant twitter accounts (Add followers)
People who are interested in certain keywords; who they are following and what they are tweeting (Add interests)
Uploading a list of twitter usernames or emails of people you want to show your ad to (Add tailored audiences)
People interested in certain TV shows or channels, who follow them and engage with their tweets (Add TV targeting).
People’s behavior on twitter (likes and shares) and even offline can be tracked and targeted (Add behaviors)
If there is an upcoming event, you can target people who are interested in it (Add event targeting)
But for affiliate marketing websites I strongly recommend that you use the Followers targeting because you will be able to target people who follow gurus in your niche.

To do that, do a Twitter search for your niche’s keyword:
Then try to find accounts that have high “Followers” number and low “Following” number.
Those are most likely to be gurus in your niche that thousands of people follow, and you could show your ad to those followers.
You also need to take a look at their tweeting timeline, those who tweet often and on a regular basis are most likely to have an engaging audience.
All this is very important if you want to get the maximum sales conversion rate on your affiliate products.
Finally, you need to set your daily budget and if you are just trying out Twitter ads then start low and keep editing your campaign and raising your budget if you see a success.
Don’t forget to write a good ad copy (Tweet) to get clicks to your product review page.
Final Word On How To Use Twitter Ads in Affiliate Marketing
Though traffic is important to your success in affiliate marketing, you still need to think of it as the last step you take.
You first need to have a stellar affiliate website that you post content to on a regular basis, provide value and help others in your niche.
People then will come to you from your traffic sources and engage with your content and best case scenario, they will buy your affiliate products because they trust your recommendations.
Don’t be afraid to try many traffic techniques and use tools whenever you see fit.
And if you are a student on any affiliate marketing course (Affset for example) then apply their techniques and try to improve on them.
